The Secret to an Effortless Photoshoot

Have you ever worried that you’ll feel stiff, awkward, or completely out of place in front of the camera? If so, you are not alone. In fact, it is one of the most common concerns I hear from clients before their sessions.

The truth is, getting your photos taken doesn’t have to feel like a chore. With the right approach, a portrait session can actually be a fun, memorable experience. To help you prepare for a completely relaxed and authentic session, I am sharing my 6 golden rules for natural, unposed photos that you will treasure forever.

1. Move and Interact Logically

Movement is absolute magic when it comes to lifestyle photography. The more you move and interact with your loved ones, the better your final gallery will be.

If I place you in a quiet stance and you hold completely still for five frames, you’ll end up with five identical images. But when you introduce soft movement, every single frame becomes distinct, giving you a beautiful variety of expressions. Don’t worry—I will always guide you. If I say “interact with each other,” just lean into the moment. Sway back and forth, tickle your child’s arm, play with each other’s hands, or steal a quick kiss. These tiny, real interactions are what make a photograph feel alive.

2. Do What Feels Normal to You

We have been trained our entire lives to look directly at a lens, hold perfectly still, and say “cheese.” For an authentic lifestyle session, I want you to do the exact opposite.

The more normal and connected you are with your family, the more beautiful your portraits will look. If I see things starting to feel a little too stiff, I might give you a silly prompt—like telling you to gently bump into each other. My goal isn’t to photograph the silly prompt itself; I am waiting to capture the organic, unguarded laughter that happens a split second right after.

3. Simplify and Don’t Overthink the Prompts

When I give you a direction during our photoshoot, try not to overanalyze it. Instead, just fall into the movement naturally. You know better than anyone else how you fit together with the people you love.

If I ask you to lean against your partner, don’t worry about propping yourself up awkwardly or looking for the perfect angle. Just rest against them the exact same way you would if you were winding down on the couch together at the end of a long day. My ultimate goal is to show the real, honest version of your dynamic—not a rigid, unnatural pose.

4. Quiet Moments Are Pure Magic

Please don’t panic if I stop talking or giving you directions for a brief moment! If I am quiet behind the lens, it is actually a fantastic sign.

It means that whatever you are doing naturally in that exact moment is absolutely stunning. When I spot pure magic unfolding through my camera, I want to keep documenting it from various angles, distances, and compositions without interrupting the flow of your genuine connection.

5. Embrace the Experience Together

Creating truly meaningful, legacy-worthy artwork is always a collaborative effort. To capture images that are entirely unique to your family, you have to let go of any pre-session nerves and just allow yourself to be fully present.

These are the timeless portraits that your children and future grandchildren will look back on to remember this exact chapter of your lives. To make sure they see the real you in these frames, show up with an open heart and let your true personality shine through.

6. Have Fun (Photoshoots Don’t Have to Suck!)

Instead of looking at our time together as a formal, high-pressure photoshoot, try making a simple mindset switch. Look at it as a fun family beach day or a romantic canyon date night!

Approaching the evening with a playful, relaxed attitude changes everything about how you look and feel in front of the lens. When you are genuinely enjoying yourselves, that radiant energy translates directly into your final images, making the entire experience completely unforgettable.
